Activate and configure badges globally

Activate badges for the entire platform

  1. Open learning successes.
  2. ILIAS shows you the selection menu with all administration entries.
  3. Select the Badges entry.
  4. ILIAS opens the administration of the badges and shows you the Settings tab.
  5. Activate the checkboxes Activate service.
  6. Click on Save.
  7. ILIAS now also displays the tabs Types, Image templates, Activity badges and Object badges in the administration.
  8. A Learning achievements > Badges area is displayed.
  9. A Badges checkbox is displayed under Additional functions in the Course settings tab.

Activate badge types

You can choose whether you want to activate all types of badges or only selected badge types. There are different types of badges:

  • Object badges: Badges for learning activities in the narrower sense belong to an object type such as the course
  • Activity badges: Badges for welcome activities of users in the platform, which are not necessarily linked to specific learning activities.

Prerequisites: The Types tab is only displayed if you have activated the badge service in the Settings tab.

  1. Open the Badges entry in the Administration and select the Types tab.
  2. Activate the checkboxes in front of the individual types.
    • Type Profile published allows you to recognize users who fill in and publish certain parts of their profile. 
    • Type Course LP allows badges to be awarded automatically in courses when a user has successfully edited an object. This is possible WITHOUT the learning progress being activated. [could not resolve link target: il_1510_pg_197615]  
    • Type merit allows tutors in the course to award badges for special achievements. 
  3. Select the Activate entry in the selection menu above the table and click on Execute.
  4. ILIAS displays Yes in the Active column for all activated badge types.

If you have activated the type Course LP or Merit, an option Badges will be displayed in the Additional functions section of the Course settings tab; if you save this option, a tab Badges will be displayed in which you can create and award badges of this type.

Create activity badges

Prerequisite: The badge service is activated in the administration. The badge type Profile published is activated.

  1. Open the Badges entry in Administration and select the Automatically assigned badge tab.
  2. ILIAS shows you the Badges table.
  3. In the Type selection menu in the toolbar above the table, select the entry Published profile and click Create.
  4. ILIAS displays a form badge profile published.
  5. Assign a title and enter a description.
  6. Enter the criteria that must be met in order to receive the badge. 
  7. Select the Upload image option under Image and upload a PNG or SVG under File.
  8. Under Profile, select which data must be entered in the profile for the badge to be awarded.
  9. Click Save.
  10. ILIAS shows you the Badges table again.
  11. Your newly created activity badge is listed in the table. It is not active.
  12. Open the Actions drop-down menu at the end of the line of the new automatically assigned badge and select Edit.
  13. ILIAS shows you the form Badge Profile published.
  14. Activate the Active checkbox.
  15. Click Save.

Create image templates

Any number of badge image templates can be created and managed in the Image templates tab. The image templates can be activated for all or for specific badge types. When creating new badges, authors can then either select an image from the set of templates or upload their own.

  1. Open the Badges entry in the administration and select the Image templates tab.
  2. Click on Add image template.
  3. ILIAS shows a form image template.
  4. Assign a title and upload an image of type PNG or SVG. Select whether this image should be valid for All types of badges or for Specific types of badges. 
  5. Click Save.
  6. ILIAS displays the uploaded image template in the Image templates table.

The new image template can also be used in a course in which badges have been activated in the Settings tab under Additional functions in the Badges tab when creating a badge.

Pass status for Course LP badge

  1. Open the Administration entry in the main menu.
  2. Select the entry Access statistics and learning progress.
  3. ILIAS displays the Settings tab.
  4. Open the Passed status sub-tab.
  5. ILIAS displays a pass status form.
  6. Set here how the default learning progress status should be set for which object type. This setting is important for the awarding of editing badges in courses. 
    • Files award the badge immediately after downloading
    • Learning modules award the badge automatically when all pages have been visited
    • SCORM learning modules are automatically assigned as soon as the SCORM learning module reports that the LM has been passed according to its own logic
    • For sessions, the badge is only awarded once the tutor has entered the attendance under "Manage participants".
    • The test awards the badge automatically when users have completed the test
    • The survey automatically awards the badge when users have completed it
    • The badge is only awarded for exercises if tutors have set the exercise to passed in the "Submissions and grades" tab.
  7. Click Save.
