Introduction to the Category link

Categories are 'containers' for objects. They can be compared to folders on a hard disk. Besides categories, there are also category links.

Using a category link, an already existing category can be accessed not only from its actual position but also from another position. So you can create a special link to an already existing category: you create a link to an already existing category at any position in the repository.

Example: You have created a new category deep down in the category structure of the repository. Although it is “technically correct”, it is somewhat hidden. To ensure that many users take note of the content of this category, you create a link to this category at the top level of the repository. Now users are more likely to notice the content.

By default, category links take the title of the category being linked. However, you can also assign a title of your choice.

Note: A user shown a category link in the tree navigation can only access the category itself if he has read access to the actual category.

Creating a new category link

You want to create a new category link and point it to a specific target category.

1. Click on the button Add new object.
2. ILIAS opens a selection menu.
3. Select the Category link entry.
4. In the tree navigation, select the category to which the category link should point.
5. ILIAS accepts the selection and reports "Object added". The target of the category link is now defined.

Changing the target of the category link

You want to change the target of a category link.

1. Click on the ▼ menu of the category link and Edit.
2. ILIAS opens a new page.
3. Under Target of the link, click Select.
4. ILIAS shows you the repository tree.
5. In the tree navigation, select the category to which you want the category link to point.
6. Click Select above or below.
7. ILIAS displays the selected category under the Target of the link.

Deleting and setting the target of the category link

You want to delete the stored target of a category link and set a new target.

1. Click on the ▼ menu of the category link and Edit.
2. ILIAS opens a new page.
3. Under the Target of the link, click Reset.
4. ILIAS deletes the target.
5. Under Target of the link, click Select.
6. ILIAS shows you the repository tree.
7. In the tree navigation, select the category to which you want the category link to point.
8. Click Select above or below.
9. ILIAS displays the selected category under the Target of the link.
10. Click the Save button.
11. ILIAS saves the new title of the category link and reports: "The settings have been saved".

Change title

You want to change the title of a category link (by default, the title of the referenced category is used).

1. Click the ▼ menu of the category link and click Edit.
2. ILIAS opens a new page.
3. Activate the radio button. Use your title.
4. ILIAS opens a text input field.
5. Enter the desired title in the text input field.
6. Click on the Save button.
7. ILIAS changes the title of the category link and reports: "The settings have been saved".
