Rich text editor - introduction

Instead of the ILIAS page editor you can use the rich text editor (TinyMCE editor) in many places. This offers much more options and leans in the functionality of known writing programs. This makes it easier to edit the text in text fields.

The TinyMCE editor is available in the following places:

  • Introduction and conclusion texts in the settings of tests and surveys
  • Question texts when creating questions in question pools for tests and surveys
  • Forum posts

The availability, as well as the scope of services of the rich text editor, depends on the respective ILIAS configuration. These settings can be made in the administration.

ILIAS page editor and a rich text editor - selection guide

When creating questions in a question pool or a test, you can choose between the ILIAS page editor and the rich text editor. These are then available e.g., in the question text and the multi-line answer fields.

This selection cannot be undone for this question. When selecting the ILIAS page editor, the rich text editor is no longer available for this question.

You can edit texts with both editors. However, the rich text editor is equipped with much more options and thus makes text editing more manageable.

Changing the size of the editor

You want to change the size of the editor. You can either adjust the height of the text box or conveniently expand it to fit the size of the browser window.

If you want to change the height of the text box:

  1. Click and hold the bottom right corner of the text box.
  2. You can now adjust the height of the text view.
Note: Please note that this does not change the formatting of the text.

Alternatively, you can activate the full-screen mode:

  1. To do so, click the corresponding Full-Screen button in the top bar of the editor.
  2. ILIAS will enlarge the text field to the size of your browser.
  3. Clicking the Full-Screen button again will reduce the size of the text field again.

Formatting single words or sentences in the text

You want to edit and format a text. For this purpose, function elements are available in the upper bar, which you can activate as needed. You can either activate the function(s) at the point where the text is to be entered. Alternatively, you can select the text passage you want to assign the formatting options.

Activate the functions in the top bar of the text editor to make the text to be displayed as:

  • bold
  • italic
  • underlined
  • strikethrough
  • superscript
  • subscript

You can also combine the functions.

You can also left-justify, right-justify, center-justify, or justify the text. Additionally, you can choose from predefined paragraph formats.

You can insert a separator line if you want to separate the content of a text section.

You can create unsorted or sorted lists or indent or outdent text passages.

The formatting of the text can be reset for all or individual sections ("Reset formatting").
