Accessibility settings
Information on the accessibility status of the system can be stored in the footer of ILIAS. A mechanism for reporting barriers can also be offered there, and you cannot pass a BITV test without these documents.
You want to activate and set these functions for this ILIAS instance.
- In the main menu, open Administration > Layout and navigation and then the accessibility settings.
- Click on the Settings tab.
- Activate the checkbox for Accessibility info. documents for this are uploaded in the Accessibility info tab.
- Enter at least one login name in the accessibility contact point field. A message is sent to the e-mail address of this contact person when a barrier is reported.
- Click on Save.
- ILIAS displays the links Info Accessibility and Report Barrier in the footer.
Upload accessibility info
You would like to store accessibility information for this ILIAS instance. This can then be clicked on at any time in the footer and will be opened by ILIAS as a new page. according to the BITV, the declaration is a mandatory component of any existing documentation for the instance. The declaration informs everyone who uses this website about the accessibility status of the platform and lists any remaining barriers. If applicable, it is explained how the required information can be accessed in another form. Accessibility functions and compatibility with assistive technologies are also part of the content.
Prerequisite: You must activate the display of the link in the footer in the settings.
- In the main menu, open Administration > Layout and navigation and then the accessibility settings.
- Click on the Accessibility info tab.
- Click on the Add document button. ILIAS opens a new page for uploading a document with the accessibility statement.
- Assign a title and upload a file from your local file system. Select .html or .txt as the type.
- Confirm with the Save button.
- ILIAS saves the changes and prompts you to check the result. To do this, click on the title of the document.
You want to display the explanation depending on the user language.
- Select Add template criterion in the document's Actions menu.
- Select a language and confirm with the Save button.
- You can add further documents for other languages.

This is the accessibility statement. The web interface of this ILIAS website has been made accessible, as far as possible, in accordance with the national legislation implementing Directive (EU) 2016/2102 of the European Parliament and of the Council. We promptly report back to the ILIAS development team any barriers we become aware of in order to further improve accessibility.

The website is partially compliant with EU Directive 2016/2102 due to the following exceptions.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is not accessible for the following reasons:
- When enlarging the text using the zoom function, the menu items "Profile and data protection" and "Settings" cannot be opened using the keyboard.
- Many of the tables used are not responsive.
- The month selection for calendars cannot be operated using the keyboard.
- Some form elements are not labeled.
As an exception due to disproportionate burden in accordance with Article 5 of Directive (EU) 2016/2102, they are currently not fully accessible.
However, the team operating this website is actively involved in analyzing barriers and providing feedback to the developers of the ILIAS functions concerned so that any barriers identified can be removed promptly.
The content listed below is not accessible for the reasons stated:
- Some content, in particular media forms such as videos, is not fully accessible. This is also due to disproportionate burden under Article 5 of Directive (EU) 2016/2102.
- Teaching materials are uploaded to the ILIAS learning platform by many different people. Since not everyone involved is equally familiar with the creation of accessible materials, the information contained in ILIAS is not uniformly accessible. The team operating this website supports teachers with instructions and training courses for the creation of accessible content and media. The content provided is thus continuously improved.

Use the link "Report barrier", which can be found in the footer of every ILIAS page. If you are already logged in to ILIAS, a mail form will appear. If you are not logged into ILIAS, a mail window of your mail program should open instead.
In the mail view, the correct address and a link to the page from which you are reporting are already entered. Do not change this information, but add as much precise information as possible to the email text about which element of the page you would like to report and why.
Your report will usually receive a substantive response within 72 hours.

Explanation of the operating concept
You can actively operate ILIAS with assistive technologies and carry out interactions. You can operate ILIAS without assistive technologies, using only the keyboard. The element that holds the focus is visually highlighted.
Orientation using ARIA Landmark Roles and headings
The most important areas of ILIAS are semantically labeled (ARIA Landmark Roles). You can navigate within the page using these labels.
- The main menu, the header and the breadcrumb are labeled as navigation.
- The main content area is labeled as Main. The blocks with the additional services are labeled as complementary.
- The header is marked as a banner, the important actions in it are dialogs and the search is highlighted separately.
Using the main navigation
The hyperlinks of the main navigation can be selected via the keyboard control using the tab key. It may be necessary to use arrow keys for individual navigation areas.
Example:
In the ILIAS repository, there is a tree view that can be accessed using the tab key. If the tree view has been activated, it can only be controlled using the arrow keys with some screen readers. You may need to switch off the scan mode of the screen reader for this navigation area.
Dashboard
The page has a main column that lists all favorites as well as all courses and groups you are a member of. You can click on the title of an object to open it. The page also has a side column in which blocks with additional services such as to-dos, calendar, news and mail are offered.
