Designing and laying out this page

Designing a page - Introduction

You want to design the start page of categories, courses, folders, or groups according to your wishes.

The content of the page can be designed similarly to a web page:

  • You can insert texts, images, animations, and videos.
  • You can create column layouts to arrange page elements as you wish.
  • You can structure content using expandable and collapsible compartments (tabs and accordions).

Assemble your page from the different design options of the page editor. In addition, you can present multiple objects in small 'packages':

  • All objects of the same type bundle the material list.
  • Several objects of different types are grouped in the object block.

You can also sort the objects on your page manually.

Illustrating and texting a page

You want to lay out the page of your course, folder, group, or category using the design options of the page editor.

  1. In the Content tab, click on the Design page sub-tab. Note: If you do not find a link "Design page" there, please get in touch with your administrator to enable this function: To do so, click on the Contact Administrator link at the bottom of the ILIAS page and ask that page editing in the Repository be enabled in the 'Editor' section of the 'Repository Pages' sub-tab in Administration.
  2. ILIAS will open the editing view of your page.
  3. Click on the + button to open the page editor.
  4. ILIAS shows a selection menu with the different design options of the page editor.
  5. Select an item to create your page layout.

You can also arrange multiple objects of the same type with material lists and multiple objects of different types with the object block.

Place a list of the same objects between texts and images

Material lists combine all objects of a certain type on your page into one list.
If you want to freely group objects of different types or only some objects of the same type, use the object block.

You want to display all objects of a certain type (e.g., all files, wikis, or blogs) at a certain place on the page.

Prerequisite: You are in a container object.

  1. In the Content tab, click the Design Page sub-tab.
  2. Click on the light gray shaded area with the + sign.
  3. ILIAS opens a selection menu.
  4. Select the entry Insert Materials List.
  5. ILIAS opens the form 'Insert materials list'.
  6. Select the desired materials in the Type selection menu.
    • The number in the parenthesis indicates the number of existing materials within the container object.
    • You can select exactly one type per material list. However, it is possible to add multiple material lists to a page.
    • Note: If there is already an object block in your container object, the resource object block will also be displayed at this point.
  7. Click the Save button.

You can now add more design elements to your home page.

Freely designable list of objects to be placed between texts and images

With an object block, you put together 'packages' for your participants that belong together in terms of content or time. For example, you can group a file, a test, and a learning module on the same topic in a common block. You can give these 'packages' a title. You can place object blocks anywhere on the pages. For example, the start page of a course can be structured as follows:
Image - heading - text - first object block with file, media cast, learning module, test - image - text - second object block test, exercise, forum.

An object block can contain objects of different types in your category, group, course, or folder. Material lists are more suitable if you want to offer all objects of the same type together.
The object block appears in your category, group, folder, or course layout. When designing a container object with object blocks, you proceed in four phases:

  • Create object block: create an object block at the location you want.
  • Assign objects: Assign existing materials or create new objects in the object block. Sort assigned objects: In the Sort sub-tab of your course, folder or group, or category, set the order of the objects in the object block or replace the whole block.
  • Decorate the page above and below the object block: Optionally, you can include the object block between other content and design elements of the page editor.

Change sorting of objects

You want to arrange the displayed objects in a specific order manually.

By default, ILIAS groups the objects within container objects by their types and sorts the respective object grouping alphabetically by the title of each object.
Prerequisite: The Manual sorting option is selected in the Settings tab of your container object.

  1. Open the Contents tab of the container object where you want to change the sort order.
  2. Click on the Sorting link.
  3. ILIAS presents numerical values in the input fields in front of all objects.
  4. Change the numerical values so that they result in the new order. The sorting of the individual objects is done by ascending numerical values. For example, give an object the value 09 to arrange it above an object with the value 10.
  5. Click on the Save sorting button.
  6. ILIAS will change the order according to your specifications.

Note: Material lists are excluded from this sorting. If your page has content inserted as material lists, you can only change the positioning of this content using the page editor.
