News and web feeds
ILIAS offers these functions related to news/web feeds:
- It is possible to create news in the repository (in container objects as well as for learning modules and glossaries), which display information about news and developments in the objects concerned. This news is displayed in an additional column on the right-hand side of the repository. They are also automatically transferred to the dashboard and displayed there in a separate box as soon as people place an item there or start a membership.
- News can also be subscribed to as RSS feeds by individuals (or, if desired, by anonymous interested parties without an ILIAS account). "RSS is an electronic news format that enables users to subscribe to the content of a website - or parts of it - as so-called RSS feeds or to integrate it into other websites. Thanks to RSS, newly published content is automatically downloaded to the subscriber's computer (or other end devices such as cell phones, PDAs or mobile gaming platforms) at regular intervals." (from: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS, date 19.11.2009). Special programs called feed readers are available for receiving RSS feeds. However, an RSS feed can also be integrated into the browser as a "dynamic bookmark".
